Lecturer in Russian and Language Program Coordinator

 

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invites applications for a Lecturer and Language Program Coordinator position with a target start date of August 16, 2024. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position, renewable yearly based on enrollments and strong performance reviews. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful applicant will teach Russian language courses at all levels, as needed; courses for graduate students in language pedagogy; introductory courses on Russian culture; and, depending on qualifications and departmental needs, beginning to advanced language courses in another Slavic Language (e.g., Polish or Ukrainian). Teaching assignment: 3/2 course load. Position also entails supervising the department’s language program, which includes the following duties: select materials and design course syllabi for Russian language courses; advise and consult with supervising faculty on that process for other languages offered by the department; coordinate, supervise, and train graduate teaching assistants and instructors in the language program in Slavic; generate interest in Slavic languages among current and prospective students to help build and sustain enrollments; co-coordinate placement testing in Slavic; represent the Slavic language program at appropriate venues. Candidates with a documented commitment to working with students or faculty from groups historically marginalized or underrepresented in the field through teaching and mentoring are especially encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in hand by the starting date of appointment, in Slavic, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a related field (Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed to the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Lecturer)
  • Native or near native command of Russian and English
  • Experience with instructional technology in language teaching
  • Evidence of excellence in language teaching
  • Training in language pedagogy and familiarity with proficiency standards and testing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced proficiency in another Slavic language (e.g., Ukrainian, Polish)
  • Training in ACTFL OPI testing and a demonstrated commitment to a proficiency-based communicative curriculum
  • Experience in program direction/supervision and program building
  • Experience teaching in North American higher education

Assistant Professor of Soviet and Post-Soviet Cultural Studies  

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a tenure-track position in Soviet and Post-Soviet Cultural Studies with emphasis on Ukraine. We welcome applications from scholars whose research explores any topic within that area through media, film, or literature and includes Ukraine. The position will start at the rank of Assistant Professor (100% FTE, on a 9-month service basis, with a 2-2 course load). Successful candidates will be prepared to teach a range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and oversee Ukrainian language instruction. Candidates with a documented commitment to working with students or faculty from groups historically marginalized or underrepresented in the field through teaching and mentoring are especially encouraged to apply.

Preferred qualifications include native or near-native proficiency in Russian and/or another Slavic language and experience teaching at the university level in North America. 

The anticipated starting date is August 16, 2024.  Salary commensurate with rank and qualifications.
