The Caucasus in the Russian Cultural Imagination. From the nineteenth-century Romantic fascination with this region, perceived as beautiful, dangerous, and exotic, to current racial profiling and fears of terrorism, the Caucasus has kept its hold on the Russian cultural imagination as Russia’s ultimate “Other.” The course will explore the representations of the Caucasus in Russian literature and film and their historical and theoretical contexts. No knowledge of Russian is required.
